Dvorak began writing the Dumky piano trio some time in November 1890. This dumka collection does not offer the customary formation of the cyclical sonata piece, but, analogous to the Slavonic Dances, instead a series of six short movements, of which each is a musical stylisation of the dumka in Dvorak's characteristic interpretation. Unlike the Slavonic Dances, however, this work nevertheless manifests a certain structural and thematic continuity. It was first performed as early as April 1891, with Dvorak himself playing the piano part. This title is part of the first Complete Critical Edition of Works by Antonin Dvorak.
