Foreword
Studies can be boring - you usually play them alone and the lack of rhythm and harmony can be dispiriting. Selected Studies is different.
This very practical collection contains the best studies written throughout two centuries of violin education from works by F. Wohlfahrt, H. Sitt, H.E. Kayser, N. Laoureux, A. Komarowski and R. Hofmann — all renowned in the field of string teaching. Easy exercises in bowing techniques and double stopping are also presented. The book deals primarily with the sharp keys and the first few flat keys.
The studies — all in the first position — have been provided with completely new piano accompaniments which give a harmonic and rhythmic helping hand, so that practising becomes more instructive and more fun. The pieces have been ordered according to their grade of difficulty, also taking variety and form into account.
The following technical skills are included in the Selected Studies programme:
•For the right hand: détaché, legato, even bowing, double strings, portato, triplets.
•For the left hand: finger dexterity, articulation, easy double stopping, scale structure, double stopped fifths. This means that you will be able to find an enjoyable study for each technique you wish to develop.
About the CDs
Study &Play is ideal for developing your playing in an enjoyable and musically sound way. Each edition within this concept features one or two CDs to add something extra to your study routine.
When you use Selected Studies the helpful piano accompaniment allows a fresh approach to practising. On the CDs you will first hear four tracks with tuning notes for each string. You will then find that the CDs provide three tracks for each study: a demo version, a play-along version in normal tempo and one in a slower, study tempo.
In the longer studies extra track numbers have been added, so that you can find certain passages quickly without having to go back to the beginning - this makes studying easier for you.
